In 2018 FESP was fortunate to secure funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support a new STEM Project called Sharing Engineering History. The aim of the project was to share the rich engineering history of the Furness area and the companies that are part of this with local school children through industry visits to schools and practical STEM activities.

Schools Taking Part:

  • St Paul's CofE Junior School

  • Sacred Heart RC Primary School

  • North Walney Primary School

  • Greengate Junior School

  • St. James' C of E Junior School

  • Newbarns Primary School

  • George Romney Junior School

  • Barrow Island Community Primary School

The children had such a good time and were full of it this morning. Thank you so much! We’d definitely be keen to be involved with other projects.

  • Purpose of the project is to help children understand the engineering heritage of Barrow and the Furness area and the engineering and technological developments that have taken place to enable so many engineering and advanced manufacturing firms to work in the area.

  • Employees from different generations working in Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing firms from Furness will visit schools to share the history of the developments that have formed their companies.

  • The children will engage in practical activities linked to the industry presentations to help reinforced their learning.

In its first year the project worked with 286 school children from Year 3 to Year 6. In total 11 classes from 9 schools took part in the project with representatives from Siemens Subsea, BAE Systems and MHI Vestas Offshore. Pupils took part in presentations from members of staff and retired staff who told them about the history behind their industries and their own stories and memories of the world of work.

Pupils then had the opportunity to engage in practical workshops linked to the presentations, these included making submarines, solar powered buggies and wind turbines.
